When we think of the most iconic late night talk show moments, there are a few that stand out: Crispin Glover nearly taking off David Letterman’s head, Jerry Lawler slapping Andy Kaufman in the face in 1982 and Jay Leno asking Hugh Grant on July 10th, 1995, “What the hell were you thinking?” following his June arrest for engaging in sexual acts with a prostitute named Divine Brown. We couldn’t have said it better, Jay.
Speaking with Chris Wallace on his titular show, Jay Leno remembered giving Hugh Grant one last chance to back out of the interview, which was scheduled well before the incident. “You know, he was great. Nowadays, you’d have 100 handlers. I called him up, and I said, ‘You still in for tomorrow?’ He goes, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘You know, I effed up. And, you know, it’s my fault.’”

Hugh Grant laughed about his infamous 1995 sex scandal with the hosts of US talk show The View on Thursday (16 March).
Grant was arrested by Los Angeles police for participating in “lewd conduct” in a public place with a sex worker named Divine Brown. He was in a long-term relationship with actor/model Liz Hurley at the time.
On The View, host Sunny Hostin asked the 62-year-old actor about his campaigns against the British tabloid press.
“Everyone thinks, ‘Oh, well he’s just bitter because he got arrested with a hooker in 1995,’” Grant said to riotous laughter from the hosts and studio audience.
Hostin’s co-host Whoopi Goldberg interjected: “But you know what, really, who hasn’t?”
The actor then continued: “But actually it had nothing to do with that because that was never uncovered by tabloids. It was that the bloody police gave everyone the information. It was nothing to do with that.

Almost 23 years ago, Hugh Grant made a big mistake — then faced the ensuing scandal with rare-in-Hollywood candor.
Not long after making his 1995 film Nine Months, he was arrested in L.A. for lewd conduct with a prostitute named Divine Brown. “There were very talented people who made that film and really brilliant actors. Only one booby who let them down, and that was me. Not only was I terrible in the film, but I then chose to get arrested in Hollywood a week before the film came out,” Grant, 57, recalls to People’s editor-in-chief Jess Cagle in the latest episode of The Jess Cagle Interview.

Hugh Grant's first TV interview after his infamous 1995 arrest has topped a new magazine poll of the best moments of comedian Jay Leno's tenure as host of America's The Tonight Show.
Leno will depart the show next week after 17 years as the king of late-night TV and his best bits have been recapped by America's Entertainment Weekly magazine.
Grant's interview after he was caught with Hollywood hooker Divine Brown beat President Barack Obama's history-making appearance in March and Arnold Schwarzenegger's interview in 2003 when he announced his candidacy for California Governor.
Leno raised laughs when he opened his July, 1995 chat with Grant by asking the British actor, "What the hell were you thinking?"
President Obama's interview in March marked the first time a sitting president had appeared on a late-night chat show.

Hugh Grant believes his arrest after being caught with a prostitute was the best career move he ever made. The hunky Bridget Jones's Diary star is notorious for the embarrassing incident with hooker Divine Brown in Hollywood in 1995. But Grant, who last year split with actress Liz Hurley after a 14-year relationship, admits the incident opened lots of doors for him. He explains, "The day I was arraigned, Joe Roth from Disney rang and said, 'Please, please, please I beg you on bended knees to do 101 Dalmatians.' And you can't get more family-orientated than that. I got way more offers after the arrest than I did before, really and truly. But I couldn't bear to do c**p all those years. I've never turned down anything that's gone on to be a success except the villain in Titanic and I'm still delighted I didn't do that. I have done a few things that turned out to be failures."...
