Netflix dares everyone to imagine that there will be a time when para-athletes will take over the sports scene with fancy and state-of-the-art implants that make them so much stronger and better than regular athletes. Afonso Poyart’s sci-fi sports flick Bionic is mainly based in Brazil, where the protagonist, Maria Santos, gets involved in the world of crime while trying to reach the pinnacle of long jumping. Let’s take a look at the cast and characters of this new Netflix release.
Jessica Cores as Maria Santos
Jessica Cores is known for playing Camila in the Brazilian fantasy series Invisible City, also a Netflix original. Cores stars as the sole protagonist of Bionic, and she is convincing as an athlete who was meant to be at the top of the world. Maria Santos is a physical specimen, and if not for the Bionic Revolution, she’d have won plenty...

Sports are inspiring; they motivate you to rise above and beyond your limits. All physical sports are mostly about the indomitable human spirit breaking through every boundary to set new records. However, when machines become involved in a human sport, the advantages that come with it nullify the whole purpose of it. Afonso Poyart’s sci-fi sports drama Bionic takes its audience to the future, 2035 to be precise. It’s an era where technology has advanced enough to replace human limbs with machines. This revolution has led to regular athletes going jobless, while bionic athletes have taken over the sports scene. Bionic games have replaced the Olympics, and here we are. Let’s get to the subject then.

Humans have wondered about the philosophical aspect of the relationship between mankind and technology via art, literature, and motion pictures since the advent of machines. This led to the rise of the cyberpunk genre with movies and shows such as Blade Runner, The Terminator, RoboCop, Inspector Gadget, Ghost in the Shell, I, Robot, Ex Machina, Alita: Battle Angel, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Love, Death & Robots, and Upgrade, which asked us to wonder whether or not an android can be as human as humans are. Through characters like Cyborg (from the DC comics), cybernetic implants and prosthetics have been used to comment on the future of people with physical impairments, which is a change that is already happening in real life. Bionic goes a step further and imagines a future where para-athletes with cybernetic implants are going to make able-bodied athletes obsolete. While it’s certainly an interesting concept, is the execution any good?...

How much would you like to see a well-written scene of dialogue between Colin Farrell and Anthony Hopkins? It’s only a fraction of the feature film in question — in which Hopkins plays a tortured psychic helping some cops catch a motivated killer who is a psychic himself — but well worth the price of admission. As directed by Afonso Poyart, Solace opens after a shelved release following the near-death of Relativity Media. Rescued by Lionsgate Premiere, the film plays a lot like too-little-too-late, a sometimes-clever thriller with a couple of performances that rise above the material.
Written by Sean Bailey and Ted Griffin, this project was originally intended to be a sequel to the David Fincher film Seven. Though the final incarnation has nothing to do with the far-more impressive 1995 blockbuster, the genre elements are all still there. We’ve got two FBI agents working with the renowned John Clancy (Hopkins) but,...

Stop me if you think you’ve heard this one before. There’s a serial killer on the loose and the FBI are stumped. At their wits end they turn to a mysterious man played by Anthony Hopkins who uses his special insights to help them track the serial killer. As the case unfolds, Hopkins’ character develops a special bond with a cool headed and forthright female FBI Agent. Am I ringing any bells here?
If you’re thinking Silence of the Lambs you’re wrong. This is Solace. Written in the early 2000s, the film was apparently given to David Fincher as a potential Seven sequel, but Fincher (displaying some pretty damn sound judgment) turned it down. The project promptly disappeared into development hell, where by all rights it should have stayed. But now, somehow, it’s escaped. May God have mercy on our souls.

"See - he's just like me... He sees things." Lionsgate Premiere has unveiled one more new trailer for the film Solace, a psychological thriller about a psychic who attempts to get into the mind of a serial killer. This was originally supposed to open in 2015 and we even ran a trailer last year, but it never came out and the thriller was finally rescheduled to open this December. The film stars Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell, one plays a psychic, the other a meticulous serial killer, who battle mind-to-mind. Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Abbie Cornish, Marley Shelton and Xander Berkeley also star. This doesn't look much better than it did last year, though it's likely better timed now with Anthony Hopkins being in "Westworld". Have a look. Anthony Hopkins may be busy building Western-themed amusement parks in “Westworld,” but before he became Dr. Ford he was helping an FBI agent solve a a series of homicides in “Solace.” Lionsgate Premiere released the latest trailer for the psychological drama, which features Hopkins trying to get inside the killer’s mind.
Directed by Afonso Poyart, the thriller follows FBI Special Agent Joe Merriwether (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) after he enlists his former colleague Dr. John Clancy (Hopkins), a retired physician with physic powers, to help him track down a murderer. At first Clancy, who left his old life behind after the death of his daughter and subsequent break-up of his marriage, wants nothing to do with the case. He then changes his mind after seeing a disturbingly violent vision, which leads him to suspect Charles Ambrose (Colin Farrell). Though he soon realizes is that his abilities are no match against the killer.

We’ve been waiting a long time for Solace, the upcoming thriller from 2 Rabbits director Afonso Poyart. Shooting wrapped up back in 2013, and while the film has seen a release overseas in certain territories, it’s yet to make its way to North America. That’ll change next month though, and to build some anticipation, Lionsgate has debuted a domestic trailer.
Though Solace looks a bit recycled and generic, it does have a unique twist to it. Anthony Hopkins will play a “retired psychic crime analyst” who returns for the proverbial “one last job.” He’ll be helping Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Abbie Cornish catch a serial killer (Colin Farrell). It won’t be easy though, as Farrell’s character has supernatural powers which help him stay one step ahead. Sounds interesting, if not a little silly, but judging by this trailer, there’s really not much here that we haven’t already seen before.

Afonso Poyart's 2 Rabbits comes bursting from Brazil with adrenaline-fueled style and unflinching violence. The film so impressed rich Hollywood types that Poyart was quickly taped to direct the Amercian thriller Solace with Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Abbie Cornish.

2 Rabbits is the kind of film that’s spawned from an obsession with fragmented criminal thrillers akin to Pulp Fiction, The Boondock Saints, Snatch, so on, and so forth. But these movies are either masterfully crafted or luckily hyped, and while Afonso Poyart commands style, his storytelling can’t quite pull off the chaotic abandon of such unwieldy voices. As you can tell from the image above, expect the unexpected from Poyart’s mind, yet the barrage of visual obscurity becomes overbearing as his screenplay refuses to stop shifting. No one is who they seem, and no character is insignificant – but with so many moving parts, it’s hard to keep them all working fluidly.
While a host of characters make an appearance, the linchpin to it all is a slacker named Edgar (Fernando Alves Pinto). His plan, in its simplest form, is to bring justice back to Brazil, while...

Anthony Hopkins hams it up to the max in Afonso Poyart’s sub-Se7en thriller
It’s ham and cheese to go from a luxuriantly mulleted Anthony Hopkins in this increasingly silly serial-killer thriller with a psychic twist. Cruising in default post-Lecter mode (I kept expecting him to tell Abbie Cornish’s FBI agent that she wears L’Air du Temps, but not today…), Hopkins plays retired clairvoyant physician Dr John Clancy, enlisted by Joe Merriwether (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) to lay his magic hands on a string of theatrically orchestrated murders. “It’s too early for a hail Mary!” complains Cornish, setting the overripe tone for the endlessly rewritten screenplay (astonishingly, Peter Morgan “polished” this turd), which was once touted as a potential sequel to Se7en. Fittingly, 2 Coelhos director Afonso Poyart goes for sub-Fincher flash throughout, making the whole thing look like a slightly creepy commercial with pop-promo set...

Sir Anthony Hopkins's incredible mind is key to solving a brutal crime in the trailer for Solace.
Solace tells the story of a psychic doctor (Anthony Hopkins) who might hold the only man alive who can catch a sadistic serial killer (Colin Farrell).
Partnering with a veteran FBI agent (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), the doctor races against time to track down the killer before he strikes again.
The thriller comes from the minds of writers Peter Morgan (The Queen) and Sean Bailey of Disney, based on an idea by Ocean's Eleven writer Ted Griffin.
Afonso Poyart filmed the thriller on location in Atlanta in the summer of 2013.
Solace bows on September 25 in UK cinemas.

Once conceived as a sequel to David Fincher’s excellent 1995 thriller Seven, Anthony Hopkins and Colin Farrell play a dangerous game of cat and mouse in the thrilling international trailer for Solace - or Prémonitions.
Operating on each side of the law, each of the two nominal leads boast psychic abilities, though while Hopkins’ former doctor John Clancy puts his supernatural powers to good use, it is Colin Farrell’s elusive criminal who taps into his powers for nefarious reasons. It’s a ying-yang dynamic that is by no means novel, but Hopkins and Farrell have long proven their acting clout, and we’re intrigued to see them go head-to-head for a cerebral battle of the brains in Solace.
Afonso Poyart directs the genre piece from a script by Ted Griffin, which still retains its Seven sensibilites despite the creative overhaul. How do you catch a killer that is always...
