Given the NewImages Festival’s remit to welcome diverse artistic voices into the immersive space, programing “Noire” was an obvious choice. An augmented reality adaptation of a lesser-known case from the Civil Rights era, “Noire” brought much pedigree to this year’s Paris Xr showcase.
The project tracks the true story of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in the segregated South who refused to give up her seat on the bus nine months before Rosa Parks did the same. Colvin’s act helped kick off the Montgomery bus boycott, but her courage never quite got the same traction as that of Parks – in part because she didn’t make for as compelling a media figure.
Ironically, that’s exactly what compelled French author Tania de Montaigne, who sought to explore that era – and its wider questions of racism and resistance – using figures untouched by hagiography. The author’s 2015 biographical essay...

Anthony Mackie, the star of “Falcon and the Winter Soldier” and the next Captain America, is planning to open his own film production studio in his home town of New Orleans.
News of the facility on a 20-acre lot in East New Orleans was first reported over the weekend by local outlets in New Orleans and confirmed by the city’s mayor Latoya Cantrell, as well as official land records in the city.
“This is incredible,” Cantrell wrote. “The influx of productions will not only bring economic growth but job opportunities!”
A representative for Mackie did not immediately respond to a request for comment to provide any additional details about the film studio.
Mackie will next be seen in Peacock’s “Twisted Metal” series based on the video game franchise, and he’s also making his directorial debut on a film called “Spark” about civil rights icon Claudette Colvin, which...

‘Avengers’ actor Anthony Mackie is set to make his directorial debut on the feature ‘Spark.’ A drama focused on Claudette Colvin, an unsung pioneer of the Civil Rights era.
Saniyya Sidney will take on the role of Colvin, Colvin was 15-years-old when she bravely stood up to racism, getting arrested after refusing to give up her seat on a crowded segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This was nine months before Rosa Parks became a symbol of the Civil Rights era symbol for courageously doing essentially the same thing. Initially embraced by Civil Rights leaders for her courage, Colvin was subsequently erased out of history when those same leaders decided a poor, dark-skinned teenage girl would not be the ideal face for their public campaign.
Mackie said on discovering Colvin’s story “Not only was I moved, but I was also inspired,” he said. “It’s great to be a superhero...

Anthony Mackie is Captain America. Sure, that’s fiction and he’s really just a quality actor and storyteller, but he also gets to put on a red, white, and blue costume (with wings and a shield) and punch bad guys in the face. All that to say, Hollywood should let the man do whatever he wants, such as becoming a filmmaker and directing his first feature, “Spark.”

As a part of Hollywood Insider's Unsung Heroes series, it is important for us to remember, appreciate and praise the heroes and make sure they are Never forgotten. In 1955, a young black woman refused to give up her seat on the bus to accommodate a white woman and in the process jumpstarted the Montgomery bus boycott. And no, it wasn’t Rosa Parks. Claudette Colvin was the inspiration for Parks’ heroic stand. Yet Parks is the name we are taught in school. Parks became an icon representing the Civil Rights Movement as a whole while Colvin faded into obscurity. As we move on from black history month, let’s not forget the name of the young girl who inspired a movement. International Women's Day is today and Claudette Colvin is in our minds stronger than ever. Hero Claudette's March 2nd, 1955 heroic/courageous act is the one that inspired Hero Rosa's December 1, 1955 heroic/courageous act.
