Cannes — Hosted by “Call My Agent” star Camille Cottin, the awards show for the 2024 Cannes Film Festival competition is underway. Presenters started making political statements right away, as short film jury president and Belgian actor Lubna Azabal called for the release of all hostages in Gaza.
Jury president Greta Gerwig presided over a majority-female jury comprised of Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona, Turkish actor-screenwriter Ebru Ceylan, Italian actor Pierfrancesco Favino, American actor Lily Gladstone, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, Lebanese actor-director Nadine Labaki and French stars Eva Green and Omar Sy.
Cottin playfully interrupted actor Laurent Lafitte’s presentation of the first award to ask whether his speech had been written by ChatGPT. Playing off that joke, the best screenplay prize went to French director Coralie Fargeat for the “bold, beautifully bonkers” (in Green’s words) cosmetic-surgery horror show “The Substance,” which stars a still-stunning Demi Moore as a has-been Hollywood...

The Memorial Day box office is no picnic this year
Based on Friday numbers, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga or The Garfield Movie may only open to $31 million to $33 million from 4,035 theaters over the four-day holiday, the worst Memorial Day opener in 40 years, give or take.
The two films are in a closer-than-expected race, but most rival studios expect Warner Bros. to take the top spot with Furiosa ahead of Sony and Alcon’s Garfield movie. Neither film aced it with audiences, with each receiving a B+ CinemaScore. Furiosa grossed $10.2 million on Friday, versus $8.4 million for Garfield. That’s not a big gap considering the latter is a family film.
With no holdovers to contribute in a massive way to the Memorial Day picnic, overall revenue may only clock in at only $125 million, the lowest showing in more than two decades. That excludes 2020 and 2021, when the pandemic was still raging,...

The Regency era dominated TV screens during the week of May 17-23, as “Bridgerton” took not one, not two, but three top spots on Luminate’s weekly streaming ranking charts.
In its first full week of availability, Season 3 Part 1 of the Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix series hit 2.3 billion minutes watched, the No. 1 title by far. Season 1 took second place with 498.6 million minutes watched, followed by Season 2 with 434 million minutes watched. It’s clear that “Bridgerton” will continue to dominate streaming rankings for weeks to come, not only because of the show’s obvious popularity, but because Season 3 still has four...

Sia will no longer dispense cash bonuses to her favorite “Survivor” players, CBS reality competition host Jeff Probst announced Friday on Instagram.
“It’s the end of one of the most unique eras in the history of ‘Survivor,’” Probst posted to his Instagram story. “After eight years, 14 seasons, 19 players and over $1,000,000 awarded, ‘Survivor’ is officially bringing the Sia Prize to a triumphant end!”
The “Chandelier” singer began her random, ultra-generous donations eight years ago at the “Survivor: Kaoh Rong” live reunion. She joined third-place finisher Tai Trang on stage and told him she was going to give him $50,000, plus another $50,000 to the charity of his choice.
“She was so taken by Tai’s commitment to protecting a chicken from being eaten that she awarded him $50,000 of her own money,” Probst recalled. Sia is a vegan. “Tai was shocked, the audience was shocked, I was shocked! What was happening? Sia was...

Fresh off his Academy Award nomination, Jeffrey Wright is returning to HBO for the highly-anticipated Season 2 of “The Last of Us.”
The Oscar-nominated “American Fiction” actor, who previously won an Emmy for “Westworld,” is set to play Isaac in the video game adaptation series. Isaac is billed as a “quietly powerful leader of a large militia group who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.”
Wright also voiced Isaac in “The Last of Us Part II” video game, making his casting a full circle choice for the Emmy-winning series adaptation.
Wright formerly starred in fellow HBO series “Westworld.” Wright was further rumored to have a spinoff series of “The Batman” at Max; the project has since been stalled as “The Penguin” series and “The Batman: Part II” film both move forward.

Morgan Spurlock, a documentary filmmaker who captured his own psychological and physical symptoms from eating McDonald’s every day for a month in the Oscar-nominated 2004 feature “Super Size Me,” died Thursday in upstate New York due to complications of cancer. He was 53.
Spurlock’s family confirmed his death.
“It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan,” says Craig Spurlock, who worked with his brother on several projects. “Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas and generosity. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”
Spurlock rose to prominence for “Super Size Me,” in which he conducted an experiment involving consuming only food from McDonald’s for a 30-day stretch. The rules also included the stipulation that Spurlock could not refuse the “super-size” option if prompted during the transaction. The filmmaker...

Benoit Blanc is back to solve another mystery in Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” film, titled “Wake Up Dead Man.”
Johnson announced the title, along with a 2025 release date, in a teaser posted to X Friday morning.
“In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed,” narrates Daniel Craig in the 45-second video, referencing the first two titles of the murder mystery franchise, 2019’s “Knives Out” and 2022’s “Glass Onion.”
“Wake Up Dead Man” will be distributed by Netflix as part of Johnson’s two-sequel deal with the streamer, worth $450 million. Despite the first film, distributed by Lionsgate, grossing $312 million at the global box office, Netflix put out “Glass Onion” with only a limited theatrical release, collecting a mere $13 million before launching it on streaming.

Darryl Hickman, who appeared in such films as The Grapes of Wrath and Leave Her to Heaven as a youngster before becoming a CBS executive in charge of daytime drama and an actor once more, has died. He was 92.
Hickman, who lived in Montecito, died Wednesday, his family announced.
He was the older brother (by three years) of the late Dwayne Hickman, who starred on the 1959-63 CBS comedy The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. Darryl appeared with his brother in Captain Eddie (1945) — he played famed fighter pilot Eddie Rickenbacker as a boy — and on three first-season episodes of Dobie as older brother Davey, who came home from college.
In 1951, after appearances in more than 40 movies, Hickman — who had been a contract player at Paramount and MGM — became disillusioned with the business and entered a monastery, though he was back in show business before long.

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” Mohammad Rasoulof’s latest film that he received an eight-year prison sentence from Iranian authorities for making, earned a rapturous 12-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere on Friday. Rasoulof risked his life by appearing at the premiere as he fled Iran for Europe on May 13 to avoid going to prison.
There was undeniable applause as the film’s credits began to roll (though it is Variety‘s policy to begin timing the standing ovation once the house lights come up), with Rasoulof getting teary and waving enthusiastically to the balcony. Ali Abbasi, the director of fellow competition title “The Apprentice,” stood next to Rasoulof and encouraged the crowd to keep clapping — not that they needed it, as their cheers just seemed to get louder and louder. There was even a sign in the audience reading “Femme! Vie! Liberté!” (“Woman! Life! Freedom!

Kodi, the canine defendant in Laetitia Dosch’s Dog on Trial, was named top dog at the Cannes Film Festival, snatching the Palm Dog prize for the best canine performance.
In a rare treat, Kodi, a 9-year-old Griffon, attended the event, a boozy and chaotic affair, as is the Palm Dog tradition, at the Plage du Festival in Cannes on Friday. He even gave a demonstration of his howling performance from the film, something the director said he had to be trained to do, not being a natural howler in real life.
In Dog on Trial, Kodi plays Cosmos, the four-legged companion of a visually impaired man (François Damiens) who, after a biting incident, finds himself at the center of an absurd trial to decide whether he will be put down. Avril (Laetitia Dosch), a lawyer accustomed to lost causes, decides to represent Cosmos.

Jeff Probst, the host of the long-running CBS series, revealed on social media Friday that the pop star will no longer be awarding money to her favorite Survivor players each season.
“After eight years, 14 seasons, 19 players and over $1,000,000 awarded, Survivor is officially bringing the Sia Prize to a triumphant end!” he wrote on his Instagram Story. “Over the many years, Sia has brought so much joy to so many players and it was always straight from her heart.”
Probst added, “So it is with tremendous gratitude and admiration to Sia that we bring to a close one of the most unique relationships a TV show could ever have with a pop star of Sia’s global wattage. I’m really honored for Survivor to have this one of a kind association with Sia.

Glen Powell is sharing why he worried he ruined 2016’s Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures.
The actor, who portrayed astronaut John Glenn in the movie, made a recent appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast where he recalled his first time watching a rough cut of the historical drama.
“It does get in your own head,” Powell explained. “People forget that when you’re watching a rough cut of a movie, it’s probably like watching the footage of yourself that you’re having to edit. So you sit there and you’re like, ‘I hate myself.’”
He continued, “I remember watching [Hidden Figures] for the first time on the Fox lot — and this was before all the effects were done, the music was in [and] the sound design — and I literally left the movie, and I puked in the bushes.”

There’s been a lot of heat around London’s new Romeo & Juliet, understandably so given its pairing of director Jamie Lloyd (Betrayal, A Doll’s House), known for his radical remodeling of classics, usually around A-list actors, with young global superstar Tom Holland. The latter is returning to the stage for the first time since Billy Elliot: The Musical at the very start of his career, his name causing tickets to sell out in just two hours.
It’s ironic, then, that one thing this production itself lacks is heat — romantic, dramatic, tragic heat. There is much to commend, but it suffers from a single, strategic mistake on the director’s part, to mute the action, quite literally, since much of it is played in whispers and mumbles; even miked, at times the actors are barely audible. The result is that this tale of violent family rivalry and courageous...

Andy Cohen has filed to dismiss Real Housewives star Leah McSweeney’s lawsuit alleging workplace discrimination and alcohol- and drug-related favoritism.
About three months after McSweeney sued Cohen, the Bravo producer asked a judge to dismiss her previous claims that she had experienced a “hostile work environment” during her time with the TV franchise, including sex/gender and disability discrimination, according to court documents obtained by People magazine on Friday.
In her lawsuit filed in February against Cohen, Bravo, Shed Media and other subsidiaries, McSweeney alleged that Bravoland was a “rotted workplace culture that uniquely depended on pressuring its employees to consume alcohol.” The suit also claimed that producers “colluded with her colleagues to pressure Ms. McSweeney to drink,” knowing she struggled with an “alcohol use disorder,” and “retaliated against her when she wanted to stay sober.”

Patricia Richardson was a major reason why the ’90s sitcom “Home Improvement” was as successful as it was for eight seasons—and she knew it. So when it came time to re-up for Season 9, she wanted to strike a deal with Disney: the same pay rate as costar Tim Allen and a producer credit.
Predictably, the network turned her down, so Richardson walked.
“I knew that Disney would in no way pay me that much. That was my way to say ‘no’ and was a little bit of a flip-off to Disney,” she told the Los Angeles Times in an interview published Thursday. “I’d been there all this time, and they never even paid me a third of what Tim was making, and I was working my ass off. Usually, it’s what’s going on inside the San Vicente Bungalows — the deals, the spiels, the meals — that gets Rambling Reporter’s attention. But lately we couldn’t help noticing what’s going on outside the buzzy Hollywood clubhouse: For nearly a week, a lone 26-year-old woman, often dressed in extravagant evening wear, has been picketing the property, brandishing a sign claiming, “I Have Been Sexually Harassed @ San Vincente Bungalows.”
Her name is Anazia Akhalu, and it turns out the target of her accusation is none other than Dimitri Dimitrov, the legendary 74-year-old maître d’ who has been a decades-long Hollywood high life fixture, working for years at the Sunset Tower before decamping for the Bungalows in 2018 (both are owned by hotelier Jeff Klein). Akhalu, who worked the front desk at Svb for five weeks last winter, is accusing Dimitrov of, among other things, “squeez[ing] on my waist and...

Richard M. Sherman, the Oscar-winning songwriter who partnered with his late brother to craft tunes for such Disney classics as Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Jungle Book, died Saturday. He was 95.
Sherman, who also co-wrote “It’s a Small World (After All)” — considered the most performed song ever — as well as “You’re Sixteen,” a chart-topper for Ringo Starr, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of age-related illness, Disney announced.
Members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and recipients of the National Medal of Honor, Richard and his older brother, Robert Sherman, wrote an estimated 1,000 songs and music for 50 movies, and they were responsible for more movie musical songs than anyone in history.

The state of California has warned entertainment industry payroll providers and others that it is implementing policy changes that could have significant tax and retirement planning implications for those in Hollywood’s creative community who use loan out corporations to manage their business affairs.
The California Employment Development Department has reportedly alerted payroll service Cast & Crew, IATSE and others of the plan to tighten rules for the use of loan out corporations. Many creatives in the industry use such a business structure to manage different forms of payments that flow in from disparate employers throughout the year. That’s increasingly common in the modern era when actors, writers, producers and directors often work on multiple TV shows or movies in a calendar year.
The change reported would mean that Hollywood employers would be required to pay creative talent wages as individuals and not as contractually obligated fees owed to a standalone business entity,...

Richard M. Sherman, two-time Oscar winner who collaborated with brother Robert B. Sherman on the songs for “Mary Poppins,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the enduring Disneyland tune “It’s a Small World (After All),” died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills due to age-related illness. He was 95.
The Sherman brothers worked in a job that no longer exists: inhouse songwriters for a studio. In their case, the studio was Disney, and the brothers were hired for that steady gig after their 1958 song “Tall Paul” was a hit for Mouseketeer Annette Funicello.
In the early 1960s, they penned tunes for Hayley Mills in Disney films “The Parent Trap,” “In Search of the Castaways” and “Summer Magic,” as well as songs for “The Absent-Minded Professor” and “Moon Pilot”; Walt Disney, always aware of synergy, made sure his family comedies had a tune with radio-play potential. The Cannes usher who appeared to verbally chastise and physically confront Kelly Rowland on the film festival red carpet this week was captured on video repeating similar behavior against Dominican actress Massiel Taveras on Friday.
In a video shared online, Taveras is seen adjusting the lengthy train of her gown, which had a large portrait of Jesus on it, down the red carpet stairs for photos when the security officer shooed her forward. Taveras appeared frustrated by the usher and the gown’s train, and at one point threw the material at two men who accompanied her before she made it to the top of the stairs.
At that point, Taveras attempted to lay out the train of her gown for photos as the usher held her arm in front of the actress, similarly to how she kept an arm in front of Rowland throughout their exchange. Taveras gestured widely toward the usher,...

The California state department responsible for providing unemployment benefits is disputing the common industry practice of paying workers through loan-out companies instead of directly, according to a major Hollywood payroll provider.
“The California Employment Development Department (Edd) has informed Cast & Crew that payments made to loan-outs should have been paid directly to the loan-out corporation owner/shareholder as wages,” payroll provider Cast & Crew said in an email sent to industry workers on Friday. “It is anticipated that this will quickly become an industry-wide issue. It will not be specific to payroll processed by Cast & Crew, and would apply state-wide, regardless of payroll provider.”
According to the payroll provider, the Edd’s position “appears to be targeted generally to the use of loan-out corporations in the entertainment production industry and would have a major impact on loan-outs working on countless productions in California.”

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

Nicki Minaj was detained at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands, according to the BBC, which is citing local media reports.
The Dutch police told NBC News they, “arrested a 41-year-old American woman at Schiphol Airport because of possession of soft drugs,” but the woman wasn’t named.
Later Saturday, the police posted on social media that they had “released” the woman they arrested that afternoon at the airport “on suspicion of exporting soft drugs.”
“After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the suspect was fined and can continue her journey,” the statement continued.
Minaj documented her encounters with officials on Saturday on social media, including an Instagram Live captured by a number of outlets and fans, on which an official is heard saying they want to take Minaj into custody for “carrying drugs,” which she denied.
“I’m not going in there. I need a lawyer present,” Minaj said from behind the camera.

George Lucas has a very pointed message for “Star Wars” haters who mocked the franchise prequels and cancelled Jar Jar Binks: the movies aren’t for you.
“It was supposed to be a kid’s movie for 12-year-olds that were going through puberty, who don’t know what they’re doing, and are asking all the big questions: What should I be worried about? What’s important in life?,” Lucas said at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, where he received an honorary Palme d’Or.
“And ‘Star Wars’ has all those things in there. They’re buried in there but you definitely get it, especially if you’re young,” he continued.
Of the ire that the character of Jar Jar Binks drew when he was introduced in “The Phantom Menace,” Lucas explained, “Everybody said the same thing about 3-po, that he was irritating and we should get rid of him.

“Bridgerton” Season 3 is here, and with it comes a new collection of string covers of iconic pop songs. The Shondaland Netflix series made a mark with its first season by packing the regency-era period story with string quartet covers of modern pop songs, and the trend continues in the new season that puts the focus on a romance between Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin (Luke Newton).

After two weeks of nonstop cinema, the moment of truth finally arrived. The winners of the 77th Cannes Film Festival were announced at a gala ceremony on Saturday night.
The Palme d’Or, the fest’s top honor, went to Sean Baker’s sex worker screwball comedy Anora. A nervous and shaking Baker took the stage and thanked the jury, saying he still “couldn’t believe it.” Baker said winning Cannes’ top prize has been “my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years.”
Baker also singled out Francis Ford Coppola and David Cronenberg, two veteran directors with films in Cannes competition this year, as major inspirations. Baker has come far, going from shooting his 2015 feature Tangerine on an iPhone5s to winning the Palme d’Or. He is the first American director to win the Palme since Terrence Malick for The Tree of Life in 2011.

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!

“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.

The home at 671 North Lincoln Avenue in Winnetka, Illinois, is iconic for one major reason: it’s where the 1990 holiday classic “Home Alone” was filmed. The 9,126 square foot house recently hit the market for a cool $5.25 million and has been “reimagined for modern-day luxury.”
The Zillow listing noted that the current homeowners, who bought the house in 2012, “took the utmost care in maintaining the architectural detail and integrity of the home’s most memorable and recognizable spaces.” As such, the foyer and entry staircase, both of which were featured heavily in the movie, have been “largely unchanged in form and structure.” Since most interior shots for the movie were actually shot at New Trier Township High School, the rest of the home is hardly recognizable to fans of the film.

Emmy-winning “Lost” and “Watchmen” creator Damon Lindelof is joining James Gunn’s DC universe. The acclaimed writer has been added to the team that will bring a “Green Lantern” TV show to life alongside “Ozark” showrunner Chris Mundy and Tom King, Gunn revealed on social media on Saturday.
“Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns Dcu series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof,” Gunn said. “A hearty welcome to Chris and @damonlindelof as they join the DC Studios family.”
Gunn, who is currently in the middle of directing the “Superman” reboot for a 2025 release, noted that King has been with the series since its inception under Gunn.
A previous iteration of a “Green Lantern” TV series was in the works before Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC. That version was created by...

When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

Sean Baker’s “Anora” has won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, a jury headed by Greta Gerwig announced on Saturday.
The win for Baker’s freewheeling film about a stripper and the son of a Russian oligarch becomes the fifth consecutive Palme winner to be distributed by Neon, which previously handled “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Triangle of Sadness,” “Titane” and “Parasite.”
TheWrap’s review said of the film, “It’s one of the most entertaining movies to play in Cannes this year, and also one of the most confounding: part character study of the title character (Mikey Madison), a sex worker from Brighton Beach who falls for rich Russian playboy Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn); part look into the world of the super-rich, an arena Baker has studiously avoided in films like ‘Tangerine,’ ‘The Florida Project’ and ‘Red Rocket’; part escalating nightmare comedy reminiscent of ’80s gems...

Filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof said his decision to flee Iran on foot this month was necessary with the release of his new film “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” imminent, and he knew while making the movie that new charges would likely br brought against him.
“There was tremendous pressure on my shoulders. I kept thinking, well if I’m arrested while making the film, I’ll spend at least five years in prison. And then obviously, I knew this film would lead to other charges against me,” he told reporters during a press conference at Cannes on Saturday.
Because of that pressure, Rasoulof asked industry colleagues in other countries if they would carry on work on the film if he were arrested before he could leave. He made the decision to go after he learned that Iran’s secret police planned to target others who worked on the movie, too.

How much can we expect cinema to be fully legible? If history, culture, and existence itself are not so easily parsed, why should the films we make about them be? Is navigating this chaotic life not defined by the both wondrous and wearisome waves of the world crashing over us?
If there was ever a film to capture this, it would be the spellbinding though scattered “Grand Tour” from director Miguel Gomes. His latest is an expansive, sweeping work that bends time, space, genre, and form. It is a wholly uncompromising experience that dances with mirth and melancholy. Proving to be evocative in one moment and unrelentingly exhausting in the next, it’s as gorgeous to behold visually as it is hard to completely embrace thematically. And yet, if you abandon yourself to it by the end as one character says, you can catch glimpses of something spectacularly sublime in...

In Hollywood, as unnatural butt lifts and overplumped lips (mostly) fall out of favor, a host of aesthetic treatments promise to give more natural-looking results, whether that means resetting brows, lifting breasts with no implants or getting face-lifts earlier than ever.
The town’s top plastic surgeons and medical pros share with The Hollywood Reporter what’s new and what their SoCal patients are requesting right now, from vertical vectoring for a non-surgical mini face-lift to regenerative medicine including harvesting stem cells from your hair follicles to create highly advanced skincare topicals. These are the latest doctor-approved treatments designed to deliver agelessness.
Brow Resets, Both Surgical and Nonsurgical
Forget the term “brow lift.” “Vertical lifting of the brow makes patients look surprised,” says ocuplastic surgeon Dr. Guy Massry. “The goal is to create shape, arch and contour; it’s about resetting and recontouring the brow, not lifting.” Massry uses a...

Social media has been both the downfall and saving grace for rising actor Ivy Wolk, who just made her film debut at Cannes Film Festival in Sean Baker’s critically lauded “Anora.”
The 20-year-old L.A. native started making irreverent comedy videos in the early days of TikTok when she was just 14, amassing over 200,000 followers on an account called @fathoodbitch. But when she scored her first real acting job on the Freeform sitcom “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay,” she was forced to delete it — so she returned secretly in the midst of the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic under the handle @livesinasociety. As her TikTok following grew even larger, the tide of public opinion began to shift. People on the internet unearthed old offensive tweets of hers, and before she knew it, Wolk found herself shunned. At the same time, she was dealing with the death of a friend.

It’s a bit of a wasteland out there for theaters this summer, as Memorial Day weekend is closing out a very underwhelming May on a down note. Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is projected to open well short of the industry’s prior estimates for a $40 million-plus bow over the four-day window. The high-budget action epic is practically neck-and-neck for first place over Sony’s animated adaptation “The Garfield Movie” on domestic charts.
The fireball “Mad Max” prequel sputtered to $10.2 million from 3,804 locations across Friday and preview screenings. It’s got Imax and other premium large-format auditoriums to bolster its ticket sales, too. It’s another tough underperformance this summer. The film’s 2015 predecessor “Mad Max: Fury Road” got to $16 million in its opening day. That movie also put together an impressive awards season run and got canonized by action genre fans. Even so, “Furiosa” seems unable...

Rolling off its acquisition of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” Italy’s leading independent distributor Eagle Pictures has scooped Italian remake rights to French smash hit “A Little Something Extra,” along with a raft of high-profile projects shopped at the Cannes Film Market.
The company, which is owned by veteran producer-distributor Tarak Ben Ammar, will produce and distribute the Italian remake of “A Little Something Extra” (“Un Ptit truc en plus), Artus’ heartwarming family comedy which has taken the French box office by storm, selling a whooping 3.4 million tickets in theaters in three weeks.
“It’s a delightful film about a father and his son who rob a little jewelry shop in a small town and as they’re looking a place to hide, they get on a bus without realizing that it’s taking them to a summer camp for young adults with disabilities,” Ben Ammar said. “They all...
