Trying to sell someone on the indie comedy "Hundreds of Beavers" is an exercise in comedic persuasion. Do you talk about how it's a black-and-white movie without dialogue evoking the approach of Charlie Chaplin? Do you highlight the slapstick physical comedy that would make "The Three Stooges" proud? Or do you simply say, "This dude fights people in animal mascot suits in the snow" and let the universe work its magic? First debuting on the festival circuit in 2022 and now finally available on VOD, "Hundreds of Beavers" has quietly become the must-see oddball indie flick for cinephiles everywhere. It's a seemingly algorithm-proof movie that, as /Film's Matt Donato described in his review, exists at the crossroads of Looney Tunes, Benny Hill, "Cannibal: The Musical," "Blazing Saddles," and Adult Swim mindsets. It's also a delightfully Midwest movie, embracing a sense of humor that has been missing from major comedy films for far too long.

It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time when a sequel to a highly popular and profitable movie wasn’t a done deal. Each was film renegotiated just before they were made. Actors signing multi-film deals was very rare. Now if you decide to do a Marvel film, you may be asked to sign a nine-movie contract. By why didn’t Ghostbusters 3, or rather Ghostbusters: Hellbent, never get made?
While Ghostbusters II wasn’t a critical darling, it did make its budget back ten times over. Surely another film had to be in the works. Some of the cast and creative team were ready to give it another go, but some holdouts stalled a third Ghostbusters film for decades. It took some of them literally dying before another film could finally grace movie screens. What kept this film from getting made sooner? Let’s...

Though it’s been over a decade since Chris Farley went to play the great gig in the sky, he’s still fondly remembered. The American actor was best known for his work on the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). However, he got his start performing with the Second City comedy troupe in Chicago. His success on SNL catapulted him to greater heights, and he eventually appeared in movies like Tommy Boy (1995) and Black Sheep (1996). It’s safe to say that his demise robbed the world of pure comedic talent. With that in mind, here are a few interesting facts...

If you were around in the 1990s and of the age to watch comedy films, you've probably come across the films "Tommy Boy" and "Black Sheep" starring comedians David Space and the late Chris Farley. The two were a dynamic duo on "Saturday Night Live," with Spade often playing the straight man to Farley's wild and goofy antics. Farley died of a combination of a drug overdose and heart disease in December 1997, but while they were together, they were fabulously funny.
/Film's own Joe Garza did a list of Farley's top sketches from SNL, including Lunch Lady Land, the Chippendale's sketch with Patrick Swayze, and of course, Matt Foley, motivational speaker. That final one is one of the most ridiculously weird things I've seen on TV, and watching Spade try not to break as Farley's Foley talks about living in a van down by the river and throwing himself onto a table is pure joy.

David Spade and Chris Farley only made two films together as co-leads. In 1995, they appeared in Peter Segal's "Tommy Boy" and in 1996, they starred in Penelope Spheeris' "Black Sheep." They also both appeared in the movie "Coneheads," although they had no scenes together, and were part of a generation of comedians who started on "Saturday Night Live" in 1990. This generation, often called "The Bad Boys of SNL," included future stars like Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, Chris Rock, and Rob Schneider. The group frequently worked together both on the show and in feature films, and some of them still collaborate to this day.
Farley, rather tragically, passed away in 1997 at the age of 33 due to a drug overdose. There was every reason to believe that, had he survived, Farley's career would have continued to progress, evolve, and include more dramatic work. Of the "Bad Boys," Farley seemed to have the greatest comedic chemistry with Spade,...

Since 1980, the weekly sketch show "Saturday Night Live" has produced eleven feature films based on its characters. "The Blues Brothers" was released in 1980 and remains one of our favorite "SNL" movies (though it's debatable how much of an "SNL" movie it is with no Lorne Michaels attached). It was another 12 years before another "SNL" movie came out, and it was worth the wait. The 1990s were the heyday for a proliferation "SNL" movies, beginning in 1992 with the beloved "Wayne's World."
The rest of the decade was hit or miss for "SNL" movies in terms of quality. We saw the return of Dan Aykroyd and Jane Curtain in the heartwarming "Coneheads." Will Ferrell got his first leading role with "A Night at the Roxbury." There was an awful "Blues Brothers" sequel for some reason. And does anyone even remember they made an entire movie with Julia Sweeney's androgynous character, "It's...

Saturday Night Live paid tribute tonight to Erin Maroney Fraser, who got her start as a senior assistant to Lorne Michaels. Frasier died suddenly March 3 at age 53. According to a GoFundMe page set up for her children, she suffered a brain hemorrhage.
Frasier held various roles at SNL, including as a staff writer, and also worked for Michaels in a variety of roles including helping develop Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She also worked on films including Wayne’s World 2 and Tommy Boy.
Fraser was most recently executive director of the Savannah Regional Film Commission, a role that she held since early January.
She is survived by her three children and husband.

If you loved Angel Olsen’s 2022 album Big Time, you’re in luck: the singer-songwriter is issuing a new EP of songs from that project’s recording sessions called Forever Means, and the track “Nothing’s Free” is available to stream now.
Olsen began pondering the definition of “forever” while on the road. “I was somewhere traveling,” she recalled in a statement, “stopped for a few days and wandering the city, and I was thinking ‘what does forever really mean? What are the things I’m seeking in friendship or love, and how can forever be attainable if we’re always changing?’” Ultimately, Olsen decided that “Forever is to remain curious, never letting yourself think you’re finished learning or exploring, while trying also to be kind and honest.”
Out April 14th via Jagjaguwar (pre-orders are ongoing), Forever Means was co-produced and mixed by Jonathan Wilson. While the project’s...

Saturday Night Live star Chris Farley admired original cast member John Belushi. Unfortunately, Farley embodied his role model too closely and indulged in the same sort of drug addiction that cost both comedians their lives. But, in happier times on the set of SNL, cast member David Spade remembered Farley’s habit of wearing Belushi’s pants… no matter what.

Channel Tres has released his sixth EP, Real Cultural Shit, via Godmode and RCA Records. Stream it below on Apple Music or Spotify.
A continuation of Channel’s efforts to blend Chicago house, Detroit techno, and West Coast rap into a single genre dubbed “Compton house,” Real Cultural Shit marks the start of a new phase in the 31-year-old artist’s career. After years of building up a niche reputation with a wide range of fans — from dance DJ circles to Sir Elton John — he’s finally taking his sound to the mainstream, and the five tracks lining the new EP demonstrate just how much pop potential his signature style has.
But make no mistake: Channel’s ascension into pop stardom doesn’t mean he’ll compromise his artistry to please the masses. If anything, the innovative sound and irresistible groove of Real Cultural Shit demonstrate that the Los Angeles...

February ushers in a new slate of movies and TV shows making their way to HBO and HBO Max, from a slew of James Bond movies to the recently released Olivia Colman-led “Empire of Light” to, yes, the Puppy Bowl.
“The Terminator,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Footloose,” “Taxi Driver” and “The Silence of the Lambs” all mark notable library offerings this month, in addition to “Superbad,” “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and “Eighth Grade.”
Despite HBO Max pulling a number of originals from its roster over the past several months, HBO Max originals premiering on the platform this month include a Dionne Warwick documentary, an adult European animated series titled “Poor Devil” and “Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special” based on the popular animated series.

Chris Farley may have died too soon -- he was only 33 years old when he passed away on December 18, 1997 from a drug overdose and heart disease -- but he left us a great comedy legacy. Born in Madison, Wisconsin on February 15, 1964, Farley developed a reputation from a young age as someone who loved to entertain those around him. Entertainment was something that he pursued later in his education, as he studied theater in college, along with communications. He further developed his comedy chops with numerous performing troupes, including the Second City theater, where he learned from improv instructor Del Close, the teacher of such comedy icons as Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, and John and James Belushi.
It wasn't long before Farley got his first big break. Lorne Michaels, the producer and co-creator of "Saturday Night Live," took notice of his talent and cast him on the show in 1990. Farley was...

If you're a fan of the late comedian Chris Farley, you've most likely seen his famous "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Chippendales Audition." It first aired on October 27, 1990, and was the first to feature Farley in a lead role. It's probably his most famous sketch, though it's not without controversy.
In the scene, host Patrick Swayze ("Dirty Dancing") plays Adrian and Farley plays Barney, two dancers auditioning to become part of the famous Chippendales dancers. Jan Hooks ("3rd Rock from the Sun"), Kevin Nealon ("Weeds"), and Mike Myers are there to judge them as they dance to "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy. The two of them dance together on the stage, with Swayze doing all the expert moves you'd expect and Farley honestly working just as hard. He was one of the kings of physical comedy, after all. Once the dancers finish their routines, they wait backstage and give each other pep talks.

When you think of the late Chris Farley, camera shy isn't what comes to mind. From his time on "Saturday Night Live" with characters like his Chippendales dancer who performed with Patrick Swayze, or motivational speaker Matt Foley who lives in a van down by the river, to his work in films like "Black Sheep" and "Tommy Boy," Farley had a wild energy and a grasp of physical comedy like no other.
Farley was a cast member on "SNL" from 1990 to 1995 and part of a group that was often referred to as the "Bad Boys of SNL" along with Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider, and David Spade. He never failed to get laughs and seemed to be game for anything in front of a camera. Off-camera, though, Farley struggled with drugs and alcohol and tragically died from a drug overdose in 1997 at the age of 33. His comedy,...

Comedians David Spade and the late Chris Farley were one of the most memorable comedy duos of the '90s, both as ⅔ of the Gap Girls on "Saturday Night Live" and as co-leads of two of the decade's classic buddy films. Decades beyond the release of the latter film, Penelope Spheeris' "Black Sheep," it still delivers plenty of Farley's physical comedy -- its funniest scenes sees him tussle with a bat and a steep hillside -- and strong buddy chemistry with Spade. But the end product mimics the earlier "Tommy Boy," but without much of that film's magic, leading one of its leading men to wish the movie had been axed.
Coming out of "SNL" fame, Farley signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. "Tommy Boy'' fulfilled the first half, grossing 32 million on a 20 million budget. Following Farley's Tommy Callahan III on a mission to sell brake pads with a less-than-thrilled Spade in tow,...

Actor and comedian Chris Farley really didn't need too much extra help to act totally unhinged, but he apparently used the power of caffeine to fuel at least one of his famously funny improv performances. In the 1995 Adam Sandler film "Billy Madison," Farley plays an elementary school bus driver who gets completely fed up with the rambunctious kids on his bus after one of them hits him in the back of the head with a sandwich while he's driving; he's a huffing, puffing rage machine. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment celebrating the movie's 25th anniversary, director Tamra Davis recalled how Farley had used espresso to get to the level of intensity he wanted, but that it was also a little scary in the moment for the director.
Farley was one of the most popular comedic actors of the 1990s. Though his tragic death in 1997 cut his career and life far too short.

Holy schnikes is it hard to live up to "Tommy Boy." While it wasn't exactly a critical darling, it performed ridiculously well in home video rentals, but none of that matters compared to the love audiences had and continue to have for the Chris Farley classic. Despite its textbook goofy '90s comedy score and some of the more painfully uncomfortable humor that hasn't aged well, "Tommy Boy" is as loveable as its lead, Herbie Hancock and all. At its core, it has a whole lot of heart which sets it apart from the rest of Farley's films. Take "Black Sheep," for example.
According to David Spade (via Uproxx), ahead of shooting "Tommy Boy," Farley had signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. Evidently, this was an effort to prove to studio execs that he was serious about his career in the wake of repeated stints in rehab. So regardless of the initial film's success,...

Adam Sandler is best known for his goofy comedic films, but he has also had several renowned dramatic roles. Perhaps his most compelling performance was in the 2002 film "Punch-Drunk Love," written and directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson. The cast also included Philip Seymour Hoffman, an Academy Award-winning actor and a frequent collaborator of Anderson's. Hoffman plays Sandler's adversary onscreen, an angry mattress salesman, but the two developed a great rapport behind the scenes.
Sandler agreed to work with Anderson because he was a fan of his previous films, "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia," he told Charlie Rose. Consequently, it came as no surprise when he learned that Philip Seymour Hoffman, who had major roles in both films, would be playing a supporting role in "Punch-Drunk Love." In Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” we’re introduced to a fearsome new villain named Namor. Played by Mexican actor Tenoche Huerta, Namor comes from an undersea community, his life defined by subjugation and colonization. At one point, he explains the origins of his name: If amor means love, then he’s an outcast (a mutant) starved of affection. No amor. Namor. He’s without love, a loner. He’s also a loaner. Because Marvel Studios doesn’t actually control the character.
The situation around Namor harkens back to the pre-Marvel Studios/pre-Disney era of making movies out of Marvel Comics characters, before the studio streamlined and controlled intellectual property. Before Marvel Studios made “Iron Man” as its own independently produced film, the company was in the habit of licensing or selling off rights to characters to other studios — the X-Men went to Fox, Spider-Man went to Sony, etc.

It's such a sad irony that Chris Farley is often remembered as a tragedy considering the hilarious human that he was. Substance abuse cut short the life of a star in his prime — and on the verge of breaking beyond the physical comedy he was known for.
After honing his craft at Chicago's historic Second City comedy group, Farley joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" in 1990. Some of his most memorable characters included the Chicago Bears Superfan, motivational speaker Matt Foley, the host of The Chris Farley Show, a mall food court Gap Girl, and of course, a dancer auditioning for Chippendales. But by the mid-1990s, Farley had outgrown the small stage of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. After shining in bit roles in "Airheads" and "Billy Madison," Farley was ready for a starring role, playing alongside David Spade in the 1995 film "Tommy Boy." The movie became a cult classic and...

Hollywood is full of mediocre comedians who get a few laughs while hosting the occasional "Saturday Night Live" episode or voicing an old, rusted tow truck in a Pixar movie, but they'll never be able to compete with the legends. We all have different opinions about who we consider to be comedy greats, but a few of my personal favorites are Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and Chris Farley. That last pick might raise a few eyebrows, but I'm more than willing to defend the man who threw himself onto coffee tables and danced with Patrick Swayze just to make others laugh -- and boy did they.
Similar to the Supreme Court's views on hardcore porn, comedic perfection is obvious when you see it. Audiences recognized it immediately in Farley. The comedian dominated any stage or set he was ever on and relentlessly attacked onlookers with unbridled, fearless comedy that left them perpetually hungry for more.

This time, Maniscalco staked a claim to Las Vegas, filming it at the Wynn Las Vegas in September, as part of his residency there. It features his take on his wife’s restaurant etiquette, the harsh realities of present day preschool and examines every day human behavior which forces him to beg the question, is it just me?
“I wanted to bring a little class back to comedy so I gave a little nod to the Rat Pack and no place does it like Vegas,” he said.

In addition to his star power on "SNL" and new comedy classics like "Tommy Boy" and "Black Sheep" (neither of which counted among Christian Bale's favorite performances), Chris Farley's appearances on "Late Show with David Letterman" were legendary in the mid-'90s. His most famous guest spot came in 1996 when he stormed through the entire theater at Studio 6-a, spinning cartwheels and doing the splits right in from of Letterman's desk. A year before that, in March of 1995, Farley appeared on Letterman after the release of "Tommy Boy" and talked nervously (as was his way) about his newfound fame and the early days of "SNL" when Letterman still had "Late Night with David Letterman" over at NBC.

"Saturday Night Live" is a very prestigious show for any comedian to appear in, but it's often treated as a stepping stone to greater success. It's the natural life cycle of an "SNL" cast member to spend a few seasons on television, increasing their reputation, before leaving the show and attempting to get big in movies or to get a television show of their own. That's the path that's been followed by countless cast members, from early stars like Eddie Murphy and Chevy Chase starring in movies to more recent cast members like Andy Samberg or Amy Poehler going on to sitcom success. Unless you're Kenan Thompson, that's just the circle of life.
There are also those who fail to gain any traction on the show, getting fired after one or two seasons on the cast. While some of their careers manage to recover, being fired from "SNL" can be...

Chris Farley is one of the greatest comedic what-ifs in recent history. The actor-comedian was an electric standout performer on "Saturday Night Live" and had almost unlimited star potential. Farley tragically died of a drug overdose in 1997, right when his film career was taking off. Had he lived longer, I can only imagine the comedies he'd have put out by now. I could also imagine a world where an older Farley takes a later-career dramatic turn, like his peer, Adam Sandler. He was truly a once-in-a-lifetime comedic talent.
The tragic story of Farley's early end is told again and again, so most people today are aware of his immense comedy skills. He also possessed other, more unexpected, abilities. Farley's last feature film before his passing was "Beverly Hills Ninja." A favorite film of Christian Bale, the movie followed Farley as an orphan who is raised by a gang of ninjas.

Penelope Spheeris' 1996 comedy film "Black Sheep" was the second film to feature David Spade and Chris Farley playing opposite each other as a traditional comedy duo. Their first was Peter Segal's 1995 film "Tommy Boy." The two had also previously appeared in Steve Barron's alien comedy "Coneheads," although they had no scenes together. "Black Sheep" was about Mike (Farley), the slovenly brother of a gubernatorial candidate named Al (Tim Matheson) who needs to run his campaign without his clumsy sibling getting in the way. To clear his path, Al hires Steve (Spade) to take Mike out of town for a few days while the campaign finishes. Spade and Farley take to the highways. Wacky road trip shenanigans ensue.
Spade and Farley made a good pairing as their comedy styles were immensely different. Farley was a broad, physical comedian who frequently played loud, clumsy characters unaware of their awkwardness. Spade,...

There have been few more versatile comedic weapons in history than Chris Farley. During his heyday in the '90s, Farley was probably the funniest man on the planet. During his time on "Saturday Night Live," he was the clear standout of the cast, the guy they'd send out to ensure laughter. He was that good.
If you were the director of a comedy in 1995, there's no star you'd rather have in your film than Farley. Maybe Jim Carrey. But for Peter Segal, the director of "Tommy Boy," there was no one better than Farley for the job. But Farley also got plenty of help from his good friend David Spade, and Segal knew that they had some expert comedic minds to lean on to fill in the gaps in the script, and that's just what they did.

In show business, sometimes Hollywood giveth, and Hollywood taketh away. All Bible quotes aside, the idiom almost applied to the 1995 comedy "Tommy Boy." After having them on "Saturday Night Live" together, executive producer Lorne Michaels recognized the chemistry between best friends Chris Farley and David Spade and pitched the idea for a movie featuring the two comedians.
The original draft of "Tommy Boy" focused more on the relationship between Tommy (Farley) and his stepbrother Paul (Rob Lowe). But the concept wasn't working for director Peter Segal. "I felt that was the B story," Segal told Deadline on the film's 25th anniversary. "The A story was these two guys who didn't get along, forced to work together to save this company, and the town."
That required a comprehensive rewrite of the script. There was just one problem: Farley and Spade were due back in New York for the new season of "Saturday Night Live.

"Tommy Boy" was the strongest entry into a genre of film that's sadly extinct, a genre which I like to describe as "Let Chris Farley Go Wild for 90 Minutes." The 1995 film from director Peter Segal is a charming low-brow comedy about a loveable idiot learning to be a responsible adult following the death of his father, who owns his hometown's auto parts plant. It's a film that relies almost entirely on the lightning in a bottle talent of Chris Farley, not to mention the underrated straight-man performance by David Spade, and they turn what could have been a mediocre comedy into a thoroughly entertaining romp that still brings about endless laughs today.
