After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. But it wasn’t just Batman. 1989 proved to Hollywood that, for the most part,...

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Alba expressed her excitement and inspiration for making this film. "I loved Die Hard. I loved Star Wars. Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson Officially Done With Colorado?
It was a struggle for Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson to get to Colorado. She was thrilled when she was accepted to Regis University as it had an amazing nursing program. Yet, she had never been that far away from home like that or for that long. Then, her sister, Anna Cardwell was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma. Wishy, the indie rock quintet fronted by Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites, have announced their debut album, Triple Seven, out August 16th via Winspear.
Triple Seven arrives after the band’s pair of 2023 EPs — Mana and last December’s excellent Paradise. Previously, Krauter released two solo albums and played in the dream pop band Hoops, while Pitchkites fronted the electro-pop band Push Pop. Their dreamy, guitar-forward sound is indebted ’90s shoegaze and indie rock staples like My Bloody Valentine and The Sundays.
As a preview for Triple Seven, the band has shared “Love on the Outside,” an anthemic power pop track with Krauter taking the lead. Sounding like a forgotten late ’90s alternative radio hit, “Love on the Outside” features a seismic chorus and a blistering bridge that turns into a feedback-ridden outro; Krauter narrates the beginning modes of a relationship, and all the while, the band toggles...

Some of you may be asking yourselves, “What’s The Guyver?” But, I suspect if you were a kid in the nineties, you know Exactly who and what The Guyver is.
When I was growing up, my parents subscribed to the Canadian version of HBO, which was called The Movie Network. The mixture of programming on the channel was eclectic, to say the least, and the blockbusters were padded out with many direct-to-video tiles, usually in the erotic thriller or action genres. Folks like Shannon Tweed, Lorenzo Lamas, and others became pretty common to see pop up on the channel. Occasionally, one of these movies would feature a bigger star and sometimes turn out to be a real gem.
With that in mind, I remember vividly as a kid tuning in to watch The Guyver because it was promoted as a superhero movie starring Mark Hamill. While that’s maybe “partly” true,...

When news broke in early February that Mariah Carey had booked a return ticket to Las Vegas to mount another residency, it was revealed that she would design the set list as a celebration of her 2005 blockbuster album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
It inspired the title of the exclusive run — The Celebration of Mimi — as well as the timing. Carey took the stage at Park MGM’s Dolby Live to launch the 16-date residency on April 12, 2024, exactly 19 years to the day after the album was released. It’s no surprise Carey wanted to commemorate the 14-track effort, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and brought the elusive chanteuse back into familiar territory at the top of the charts. The success of Emancipation of Mimi was fueled by the No. 1 smash “We Belong Together” and punctuated by singles “It’s Like That,” “Shake It Off,” “Get Your Number,” “Don’t Forget About Us,...

Jessica Alba was once one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but she has turned away from the limelight since. Her career was marked by highs and lows, and Alba enjoyed a lot of success at the height of her popularity.
The actress’ journey to stardom was not easy, though, and it took her years to open up about her troubles. What Alba endured during her teenage years was nothing short of horrific, and she still carries those scars to this day, with her experiences mirroring that of Sydney Sweeney’s.

Barbara Corcoran, one of the stars of ABC’s reality television show Shark Tank, recently bought a trailer. Yes, the millionaire real estate mogul bought a mobile home. The mobile home is in Los Angeles, California. Specifically, it is in the Pacific Palisades area of one of the United States’ largest metropolitan areas.
Why A Mobile Home?
It is hard to imagine a Shark Tank millionaire buying a mobile home. Mobile homes are not usually thought of as a home to the wealthy and famous. Despite the stigma mobile homes conjure up, the real estate mogul bought herself a mobile home.
Although the thought of living in a mobile home brings to mind The Beverly Hillbillies or Honey Boo Boo and her mother, Barbara Corcoran did not let that stop her from buying it. The Shark Tank star does not think of it as trailer. “Here’s my Taj Mahal – everything’s little,...

Rick Moranis is most popularly known among fans for his scene-stealing performance as Louis Tully in the original two Ghostbusters films. Additionally, he also starred in other hit comedy films such as Spaceballs, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Parenthood, My Blue Heaven, and The Flintstones.
Rick Moranis as Louis Tully in 1984’s Ghostbusters
The actor has rarely been on screen since the 2000s. However, that almost changed when he was approached to do a brief cameo in 2016’s Ghostbusters starring Melissa McCarthy. However, the actor had no interest in reprising the role in the film because it made no sense to him.

In “Crossing,” the new film from “And Then We Danced” director Levan Akin, the earthy spirit of Italian icon Anna Magnani is channeled by not one but two actresses who resemble her. There’s Mzia Arabuli as Lia, a retired schoolteacher on a journey from Batumi in Georgia to Istanbul in Turkey to find her missing trans niece, and Deniz Dumanli as Evrim, the trans Ngo lawyer the movie dupes us into thinking is Lia’s niece. The two women are as far apart on the joie de vivre spectrum as any pair could be — Lia has calcified into an emotionless stone who gives away nothing, while Evrim lives freely and sexually liberated in an otherwise LGBTQ-challenged country — yet “Crossing” movingly bridges the space between them as Lia gets closer to locating her niece with the help a Gen Z Georgian teenager named Achi (Lucas Kankava).

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...

A while back, they decided to split off in their own directions, with Joel directing The Tragedy of Macbeth and Ethan making the documentary Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind as well as the upcoming crime comedy Drive-Away Dolls (which reaches theatres on February 23rd) and the recently announced Honey Don’t. Last summer, Ethan revealed that he was developing a new project with Joel… and now it looks like the Coen brothers might be reuniting to make a horror movie!

Focus is also behind Honey, which reunites the Dolls producing team of Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title, Robert Graf, Coen and Cooke. Qualley is also returning player from Dolls.
Coen and Cooke wrote the script, the details of which are being kept hush-hush, but it is said to have the pulpy flavor of Dolls. Sources say the story is set in Bakersfield, California. Netflix has set a March 6 premiere date for “Supersex,” the series freely inspired by the real life of global porn star Rocco Siffredi, who has more than 1,500 hardcore films to his name.
The series is created and written by prominent Italian screenwriter Francesca Manieri who is known to be a militant feminist. It is described in promotional materials as a profound story that runs through Siffredi’s life since childhood and looks at his family, “his relationship with love” and how “Rocco Tano — a simple guy from Ortona [a small town in central Italy] — became Rocco Siffredi, the most famous pornstar in the world.”
“Supersex” directors are Matteo Rovere (“Romulus”), Francesco Carrozzini (“The Hanging Sun”) and Francesca Mazzoleni (“Punta Sacra”).
At the center of “Supersex” – which is being produced by Lorenzo Mieli’s The Apartment, a Fremantle company, and Groenlandia, which is part of the Banijay group – are unknown aspects of the Italian porn star, who...

Could you describe the plot of the 2001 Julia Stiles movie "Save the Last Dance" while simultaneously performing Julia Stiles' final dance from the 2001 Julia Stiles movie "Save the Last Dance"? Not many people can answer "yes" to this questions, but one person who can is "Saturday Night Live" cast member Chloe Fineman, who did just that on this weekend's episode. She was even joined for the final portion of the dance by Julia Stiles herself, in a surprise cameo.
"Save the Last Dance" received mixed reviews when it was first released, and in the two decades since the "street ballet" dance that Stiles' character performs in her successful audition for Juilliard has become a recurring target of internet mockery. Still, whether you love, hate, or have never seen "Save the Last Dance," there's no denying that its $131.7 million box office gross helped reignite the Hollywood trend of dance movies. Without "Save the Last Dance,...

Yoko Ono said her relationship with John Lennon was “a long roller-coaster.” Yoko said she and the “Imagine” singer giggled often while they were making two of his albums. One of those albums became a tremendous success. The other only produced one hit.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono had a great time making ‘Double Fantasy’ and ‘Milk and ‘Honey’
David Sheff interviewed John and Yoko in 1980. His interview appeared in the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. In a 2020 introduction to the book, he discussed meeting up with Yoko long after John’s death.
“Years later, I reminisced with her about that time,” Sheff wrote. “She still got teary-eyed over John, though she had a full and productive life again. When we talked about that summer, she got a big smile. “‘The making of Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey was a great time for us,...

In 2005 and in 2007, director Tim Story made a pair of feature films starring the Fantastic Four, one of Marvel Comics' most superlative titles. "Fantastic Four," created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, was more or less a family sitcom except the three family members and their best friend all happened to have superpowers. It was light and comedic, while also featuring bloviating, demonstrative supervillains who shouted regularly about the glories of world domination. It was a comic book series that declared itself to be The World's Greatest Comics Magazine!
Story's feature film adaptations were not very well received when they were released. 2005's "Fantastic Four" only bears a 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its sequel, "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," only has a 38% approval rating. Moreso, Marvel Comics fans were harsh to Story's movies, hating their cartoony tone and corny scripts. It's worth acknowledging, however, that Story's...

It was a family affair for superstar songstress Mariah Carey as she brought her Merry Christmas One and All! tour to the Hollywood Bowl for two sold-out shows on Nov. 17 and 19.
Joining the superstar onstage both nights were her 12-year-old twins (with Nick Cannon), Moroccan and Monroe, or “Roc and Roe,” as the singer put it. Carey’s daughter, Monroe, joined her mom for a duet on a soaring “Jesus Born on This Day,” from Carey’s 1994 holiday album Merry Christmas, with Monroe also fronting a rollicking version of The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.” Moroccan made a brief appearance for “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane).” Upbeat versions — complete with all the “zhuzh,” Carey noted — of her Christmas standards started out the set list with cheer.

Actress Jessica Alba has reflected on her past style decisions. In a new TikTok clip shared by Bobbi Althoff, the podcaster talked to the actress, 42, about having an “awkward phase” while growing up.
As the video started, Althoff, 26, insisted Alba had skipped her “awkward phase” while the actress stated that the assumption was incorrect, reports ‘People’ magazine.
Still, Althoff felt that the ‘Dark Angel’ alum had the liberty of missing out on “a normal person’s awkward stage.”
“If I showed you pictures of me when I’m saying awkward, you would be like – you would look at me differently,” the host claimed.
Alba then shed light on how she actually got an early start on the so-called cringe rite of passage. “It’s so weird that I started using a curling iron and hairspray at age, like, five,” she confessed. “And no wonder I had so much asthma.”

Måneskin had the distinction of being one of the few rock bands to play the 2023 MTV VMAs. The Italian outfit made the most of the moment, delivering a performance of “Honey (Are U Coming?)” that had the whole house on their feet — Taylor Swift included.
Frontman Damiano David began the performance in the crowd, singing into a handheld camera. As he made his way past Swift, she blew him a kiss. David then made his way to the stage and rejoined the rest of Måneskin for an electrifying rendition of the band’s new standalone single.
Måneskin’s “The Loneliest” won up for Best Rock at this year’s VMAs, while they’re were also nominated for Group of the Year. Last year, MTV censored the band’s performance of “Supermodel” after bassist Victoria De Angelis’ top fell off on stage. The track later appeared on the Italian rockers’ 2023 album Rush!

The story of Riley Keough and Gina Gammell’s War Pony, which traces the lives of members of the Oglala Lakota tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation, starts on the set of another film. As she awaited filming a scene in Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Keough struck up a friendship with extras Bill Reddy and Franklin Sioux Bob from Pine Ridge. She would later visit them at the reservation with Gammell, her producing partner, and the quartet’s energy began funneling the energy of their friendship into a cinematic form.
“The spirit of that summer informed War Pony,” Keough admits. Just as American Honey’s egalitarian end credits don’t attribute hierarchical titles to the artists involved in the film, so, too, does War Pony embody a spirit of collaborative creativity. In conjunction with the wider Pine Ridge community, Bill and Franklin’s experiences and stories of growing up...

Thirty years ago, when Mariah Carey stepped into the studio with David Morales and transformed “Dreamlover,” her seventh Billboard Number One into an underground dance-floor smash, it didn’t just place the singer-songwriter in front of a whole new audience, it changed pop-dance remixing forever.
By 1993, Carey was already a phenomenon, having seen her first five releases top the Hot 100. There were huge expectations for her third album, Music Box, and its lead single, “Dreamlover,” released on July 27 of that year. Both would go on to deliver that result, selling...
