Director Richard Linklater rues that Hollywood has taken to creating sexless characters and superheroes without genitalia.
The writer/director of films including the Before trilogy and Boyhood is behind Netflix’s Hit Man, one of the standout successes at last year’s Venice Film Festival. Linklater calls the movie, starring Glen Powell and Adria Arjona, a “sexy crime thriller meets screwball comedy” and says the plot hinges on Arjanoa’s character Maddy being “the one he will risk everything for, just to sleep with her.”
Linklater told The Times of London: “Sex and violence is what cinema is great at. Sex was always the great seller; I don’t know why they backed off from that. Hollywood started feeding this new generation characters that were sexless. Superheroes don’t have sex. They don’t have genitalia, frankly.”

So first things first, romantic TV shows haven’t really worked since shows like Modern Love and Normal People stopped airing. That somewhat changes Prime Video’s new romcom, Maxton Hall. The heir of one of the richest business families in England, James Beaufort, is everything one expects a spoiled brat to be. Adding to his good luck and fortune are his freakishly good looks; he’s a force to be reckoned with in his school. He’s also the headliner of his family’s latest fashion line, Young Beaufort, and his life seems pretty seamless until he finds what he truly craves for himself.
Spoilers Ahead
How does James meet Ruby?
James’ sister Lydia asks for his help when Ruby walks in on her making out with a teacher, Mr. Sutton. James immediately reaches out to Ruby and tries to bribe her with cash. Ruby belongs to a modest family with poor financial status,...

While it may feel like The Hunger Games franchise just arrived on Netflix, it will be leaving the streamer at the end of the month. On May 31, all of the films in The Hunger Games franchise will be removed from Netflix. But that fate awaits more movies than that. Here are 8 other movies you might want to watch before the end of the month, before they're gone from your subscription.

Element Pictures is coming off the back of yet another buzzy awards season with its absurdist comedy Poor Things, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, notching 11 Oscar nominations and coming home with four wins, including Best Actress for Emma Stone. But just when it feels like the company’s trajectory can’t get higher, the Irish-Anglo production, distribution and exhibition banner is hitting the Croisette this year with no less than three films in the Cannes official selection. Lanthimos’s Kinds of Kindness, which reunites him with his long-term writing partner Efthimis Fillipou and Poor Things stars Stone and Willem Dafoe, will compete for the Palme d’Or, while French actor Ariane Labed’s directorial debut September Says and I Am Not a Witch director Rungano Nyoni’s sophomore feature On Becoming A Guinea Fowl are both screening in the Un Certain Regard section.

Netflix’s library keeps expanding as the streaming doesn’t miss a chance to catch more of its audience’s attention with new and often very exciting monthly releases.
Be that an iconic romcom from the 2000s or quite a recent movie that was forgotten soon after its theatrical run, Netflix offers a second life to a sometimes very random set of films, and this time the streaming welcomed quite a controversial mystery drama released in 2022.
Produced by Reese Witherspoon and her own media company Hello Sunshine, Where the Crawdads Sing is a movie based on Delia Owens’ 2018 novel of the same name. Having Normal People’s star Daisy Edgar-Jones as its leading actress, the film follows Kya, a rebellious girl abandoned by her entire family when she was seven years old.

Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (Paul Mescal) forever. Normal People premiered on April 26, 2020, right as the world plunged into a global pandemic. For many, Marianne and Connell’s journey in the Hulu series was an escape from the worries of our then-reality. Now, Edgar-Jones is looking back on the show that changed her life. “It is beyond crazy to me that Normal People premiered 4 years ago today,” she wrote on her Instagram Story. “This show gifted me so much, primarily my best friends in the whole world. I hope Connell’s back in Dublin now and Marianne has grown out the micro fringe. Love you forever Np.” Her mention of hoping “Connell’s back in Dublin” will surely delight Normal People fans. Viewers were left devastated by the finale when Connell left for a writing program in New York, while Marianne stayed behind in Dublin. Their relationship was left open-ended,...

The lasting confrontation of the book lovers and the cinephiles doesn’t seem to come to a conclusion. However, some series based on the novels and on the games are known for objectively better elaboration of the source’s events and character development.
Here are 7 TV titles which surpass the material they were adapted from.
The Boys (2019 – …)
The live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s superhero comic book series appears to be more relevant and worth a try as it adds a razor-sharp social commentary to the initial plot, also improving the development of the main characters.
Dexter (2006-2013)
Based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, this crime series is more recognized by its creative screenwriting decisions, including the more intricate description of the serial killer’s personal life and ways of performing the crimes.
Normal People (2020)

Fans of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator franchise must be rejoicing after the first footage from the much-anticipated sequel to the 2000 blockbuster was screened for CinemaCon goers last Thursday. An introduction from the director all the way from London was shown at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Russell Crowe in Gladiator (2000)
With Paul Mescal in the lead, the movie promises to be “possibly more extraordinary than the first” as the veteran filmmaker pledges the second installment is worth the twenty-four years of waiting.
Gladiator 2’s First Footage Introduces Paul Mescal On The Lead
The footage exhibited the first look at Paul Mescal as Lucius, the nephew of Commodus and the son of Lucilla. The figure appeared astoundingly fit and fighting inside the arena against a man carried by a rhino and a herd of baboons. The character says:
“I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor.

Instead of sending in the lions, Paramount unleashed a first look at Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator II at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Appropriately screened at Caesar’s Palace, where the annual onslaught of film and television previews takes place, the sequel to Scott’s 2000 action drama starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix includes a brutal display of power and corruption as Lucius (Paul Mescal) aims to become as formidable as Crowe’s iconic character Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott introduced the film from London while the entire cast sent comments in a video compilation. Scott says Gladiator II is more spectacular than the original. Thems bold words, sir!
Pedro Pascal has always been a huge Gladiator fan and has seen it twice in theaters. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington says the new film is why people go to the movies.

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones have somehow found a way to make relentless natural destruction sexy.
The leads of “Twisters,” along with costar Anthony Ramos, showed up onstage at the annual movie theater owners gathering CinemaCon to offer a first look at the sequel to the 1996 adventure film “Twister,” which starred Helen Hunt and the late Bill Paxton.
The chemistry between the “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Normal People” stars was palpable. The exhibitors ate up Powell as a cocky “tornado wrangler” fond of strutting in wet t-shirts and pushing an absurdly tricked-out pickup truck. The actors were also open about their intense filming conditions, saying they shot in 120-degree heat, got hit with a jet engine, smothered with hay, had a water tank dumped on them, got pelted by ice, were covered in trash and dragged by wires.
While Powell and Edgar-Jones are proven box office draws, the ensemble cast...

Emily Henry fans had a field day last week when the author shared a St. Patrick’s day selfie of “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri and “Normal People’s” Paul Mescal.

Leo Woodall first came to prominence when he featured in season two of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” In that series, he played the, uh, “nephew” of Tom Hollander‘s character and made quite a splash in the role. Now, Woodall has gone from supporting player to leading man with Netflix’s new miniseries, “One Day.”
Adapted from David Nicholl‘s 2009 book of the same name (and the second adaptation overall after the much-maligned 2011 Anne Hathaway movie), “One Day” follows Woodall and “This is Going to Hurt” star Ambika Mod as two students (Dexter and Emma) who meet on graduation night. That chance meeting sparks an entwined relationship that encompasses friendship and lovers across a 20-year period as they continually meet on various July 15ths.
The result is a swooning, epic romance that hinges on the charisma of its two leads. Thankfully, both Woodall and Mod are up to the task.

The BBC have unveiled a new slate of star-studded dramas including the TV adaptation of James Graham’s football play “Dear England” starring Joseph Fiennes, a new co-pro with “Euphoria” producer A24 and the screenwriting debut from “Sex Education” star Aimee Lou Wood.
Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt revealed the 12-strong slate – which adds up to 66 hours of top TV – at a press event in London, U.K. on Wednesday evening. It includes two more series of Belfast-based police drama “Blue Lights.”
“Inflation, content and platform saturation, streamer retrenchment, the writers’ strike… It’s all fed a serious slowdown,” Salt said as she unveiled the diverse slate. “Five years ago, everyone was willing to make brave choices, to experiment, to try something a little unorthodox. Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy – behind “Slumdog Millionaire,” “127 Hours” or “The Full Monty” – has joined “S.O.L.”
The six-episode thriller, presented at Berlinale’s Co-Pro Series and developed with TV4, is produced by Warp Films (UK) and Rainy Days (Sweden). It was created by Ruth McCance. Diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer, she died in December, aged 53.
“Ruth had written a pilot episode script and outlines for the remaining five episodes,” explained producer Peter Carlton.
“It had always been our intention to bring on another writer to work alongside her. When we knew Ruth was dying, we spoke about the future of the project. We felt we would like to complete the work she had started in her honor and for her kids.”
“With her blessing, we are doing just that. We were able to tell her it had been selected for Berlinale.”
Beaufoy was an “obvious first choice,” Carlton stated.

Sydney Sweeney is the woman of the moment. As is, the actress is never completely off the radar of the tabloids because of her performance as Cassie Howard in the popular HBO series- Euphoria. She has been recently making headlines for her performances in the rom-com- Anyone but You and the superhero film Madame Web, which is set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
While Madame Web has not done particularly well with the audience or critics, Anyone but You has done much better in both of these aspects. Fans found Sydney Sweeney’s chemistry with Glen Powell extremely captivating. This brings fans to the question of which actor is next for Sweeney to start an on-screen romance with. While there is no confirmed answer to this question, Sweeney has someone in her mind that she would like to star alongside in a rom-com.

The first trailer for the upcoming non-sequel Twisters has arrived, taking the Super Bowl by storm during its debut.
After a brief teaser during Super Bowl Lviii, the Twisters trailer hit the web, with the ominous warning that, “Whatever’s in there, it’s big and it’s moving fast.” We then get a hype call and response of, “If you’re feelin’ it” … “Chase it!” – which we have to admit would make a great tagline! The action only amplifies, with the warning that the team will be facing off against twin twisters, hence the movie’s title.
But lest you think this is a direct sequel to 1996’s Oscar-nominated Twister, you’ll notice that none of the surviving original cast members – Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, and more – were featured. That’s because Universal’s Twisters doesn’t rely as much on the original as you’d think,...

Who doesn’t love a good disaster movie? A sequel to the 1996 hit film Twister has another group of storm chasers chasing the big one. Among that group of chasers are Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People), Anthony Ramos (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts), Katy O’Brian, and David Corenswet, who will play Superman in James Gunn’s new-look DC Cinematic Universe (Dcu). This trailer really captures the vibes from the original and I really liked it. Glen Powell is box office gold right now, so this should do well in the summer box office.
Director: Lee Isaac Chung
Main cast: Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, David Corenswet, and Katy O’Brian

Robert Downey Jr. looks like one of the biggest locks at the Oscars after winning the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Oppenheimer.” He’s also nominated at both the SAG and BAFTA Award. Could the latter throw up a surprise victory for someone else?
Downey Jr. is nominated alongside Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Jacob Elordi (“Saltburn”), Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”), Paul Mescal (“All of Us Strangers”) and Dominic Sessa (“The Holdovers”). Irish actor Mescal poses the biggest threat to Downey Jr’s BAFTA chances. In the Land of Saints and Sinners trailer pits Liam Neeson in a cat and mouse game with Kerry Condon
Liam Neeson returns to his native Ireland with an ensemble cast of notable Irish actors in the “Irish-Western,” In the Land of Saints and Sinners. The film comes from director Robert Lorenz. Along with Neeson, the crime thriller also stars Colm Meaney, Oscar® nominee Ciaran Hinds, Oscar® nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin), Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones), Desmond Eastwood (Normal People) and Sarah Greene (Bad Sisters).
The official synopsis from Samuel-Goldwyn films reads,
“Ireland, 1970s. Eager to leave his dark past behind, Finbar Murphy (Liam Neeson) leads a quiet life in the remote coastal town of Glencolmcille, far from the political violence that grips the rest of the country. But when a menacing crew of terrorists arrive, led by a ruthless woman named Doirean (Kerry Condon), Finbar is drawn into an increasingly vicious game of cat and mouse, forcing him to choose between exposing his secret identity or defending his friends and neighbors.

While Paul Mescal’s name is very well known in Hollywood, he isn’t sure if he’s ready for the possibility of global attention following Gladiator 2.

Paul Mescal is already an Oscar-nominated actor with a diehard fanbase thanks to his roles in “Normal People,” “Aftersun,” “All of Us Strangers” and more, but his fame is surely going to explode this fall when Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2” opens in theaters. Mescal is headlining the sequel opposite a heavyweight supporting cast that includes Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. The original “Gladiator” made Russell Crowe one of the world’s most famous actors and won him the Oscar for best actor. Is Mescal ready for such worldwide attention?

Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” was revered by the British critics and scored well at the European box office, but it found a muted stateside response. (The Metascore is 64 — respectable but not stellar.) During the awards race (ballots are due January 16 at 5 Pm Pt), the movie scored well with crafts — but the Golden Globes nominated Joaquin Phoenix for “Beau is Afraid,” not “Napoleon.”

“Weekend” and “Looking” filmmaker Andrew Haigh is back with another soulful examination of love, family and queerness, “All of Us Strangers.” Emmy-nominated “Fleabag” star Andrew Scott and Oscar-nominated “Normal People” and “Aftersun” breakout Paul Mescal star as two men in London, who bond after a chance encounter. Meanwhile, Scott’s Adam encounters his parents in his childhood home — exactly the same as they were the day they died thirty years ago. From there, a surprising and heartbreaking ghost story ensues.
“All of Us Strangers” is a beautiful, haunting film tangled up in the root of identity, where Haigh prods at the intersection of family, culture, sex and love; and the intimacy and aloneness within each. It’s a super personal piece for the filmmaker, it’s poised to be a player in the 2024 awards conversation and it’s finally heading to theaters.

Natalie Portman and Paul Mescal are actors whose craft inspires as much admiration as the finished product on-screen. Portman, whose career now spans more than 30 years, including films like “Black Swan” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” keeps us enthralled — this time, with her simmering performance in Todd Haynes’ psychodrama “May December.” The Oscar winner portrays an actress preparing to play a tabloid fascination (Julianne Moore), who became romantically involved with her husband (Charles Melton) when he was 13.
Mescal, whose meteoric rise began in 2020 as a tortured young man in love with a damaged introvert in Hulu’s “Normal People,” delivers another poignant turn in Andrew Haigh’s “All of Us Strangers.” A meditation on grief and regret, the film sees Mescal as the free-spirited neighbor and potential mate to a screenwriter (Andrew Scott) quite literally haunted by his past. Together, Portman and Mescal discuss physical transformation, the positive evolution of...
