Alexander: The Making of a God (2024)
narration style is unbearable
The narration style is absolutely atrocious. I can't stand constant interruptions I don't mind narrating before, but to constantly interrupt every single narration prevents. If you were getting involved in the scene narration is supposed to add to what you see the part of the story here it feels like it is the focus and the story is second I am not a fan of this now at all, and I hope Netflix reconsiders
maybe narration at the beginning of an episode, the middle in the end, but anything more than that is simply unbearable
I do like showing actual footage of a city and then going into a scene that transition works. However, this doesn't even happen. It goes from actual scene with archaeologist to an narrator then to the scene they missed a valuable opportunity. The directing has one other review perfectly said " was this made by a child" and recommend you read that review they describe it very very well
I really like these historical topics but not when it's so poorly done.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
love the monsters, hate the monstrosity of the human filth
TLDR: another comment said it best - watch first three; do house cleaning dishes etc as for middle episodes; then watch the final two. Last one is great!
Humans suck. Monsters rule. 90% of every episode is, as many wonderful reviewers eloquently said, "teenage drama" with monster cameos of 2-5 minutes. But OH WHAT CAMEOS!
This chalks up as a series that could trim the fat - it is 7 episodes too long. It is really that bad. Empty characters, atrocious acting; you dont care for them or for finding their father. But not so bad as in good, not even that. You are rooting for them to get crushed or sucked into the sea. Btw physics dont apply here; jeeps tumble down cliffs but humans are strong enough to not tumble - they got that core strength and sheer willpower! Ridiculous.
I dont want to know about their father at all. Or listen to their incessant whining. I want to know about Godzilla's father - does he have one? Did it hatch from an egg - what came first - baby zilla or the egg? Godzilla could roar for 40 minutes and stomp around and I would love it.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Boring disappointment
My favorite reviewer here is the "Greeting from the darkness" dude. I appreciate their insight.
But this movie was simply boring. DiCaprio's fake scowl disappears in one scene that seems laughable- when he is trying to hire a man for a job; makeup crew skipped a day, perhaps? I cant stand mistakes like this. How are there scenes where DiCaprio looks younger? Perhaps 3+ hours invites the over scrutiny but scorcese is asking for it.
How about the stabbing scene that is so poorly acted you can see no blood on knife or that the knife makes contact at all? Review that and get back to me.
Dont make a film so long if you cant keep it interesting.
Full Circle (2023)
Detective is extremely annoying - unwatchable
Tried for three episodes because Claire Danes but I could not stand the atrocious acting from the detective. Her script is underwhelming. She is intentionally annoying. There's nothing likable about her after three episodes, she is un watchable. I am rooting against her hoping she gets taken out but she is the main character unfortunately and I cannot last knew longer in this ridiculous script. The score is good a bit overdone, and the Jamaican Nephew is also extremely annoying voice, but the Jamaican sons are cool and that is all absolutely terrible detective. I will hope she is not any other shows I want to watch she needs to get out of here. She's terrible sucks. She's horrible.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: A Shadow of the Past (2022)
Delightful Visuals + Enchanting Dialogue
Visually stunning - no one can deny that. But since we are spoiled so much by amazing cgi these days, I invite you to focus instead on the wardrobe of the characters, especially their armor. The Elven soldier from the watchtower(?) - who is without a doubt a serious badass just by how smoothly he swings his bow around his shoulder as if he's done it for 79 years - has such an awesome breastplate! The palma merenti crown that elves wear looks sooo fancy, too.
When the elves talk, it feels like we are watching a play; Elrond and Galadriel's dialogue sounds Shakespearean with flowery prose that matches the gorgeous garden setting. Words fall out of their elven mouths like ethe golden leaves that grace their capes.
I enjoy that this is a series, and not a movie. I feel like with the series we can take our time developing more of the story, the characters, and dive deeper into the land of Middle Earth. It is very exciting to share this with my nephews who have recently read The Hobbit.
This is our intro to LOTR: Ring of Power and I'm all for it!
Vengeance (2022)
Texas Stereotypes galore - otherwise decent
If you can get passed Texas stereotypes and Ashton's horrible accent, it is a fun summer flick. Yeah I get that's the point - playing on the stereotypes but actually in a way liberating the protagonist but c'mon it is tacky super tacky. Getting passed that takes some effort, and then the movie is fun. Gonna go to Six Flags now!
Whitney Cummings: Jokes (2022)
Schulz recommended!
Saw her on flagrant pod couldnt stop laughing so caught the special on netflix
first part sex jokes then last part hilarious nostalgia for us 30 40 somethings. Kids these days dont know how we did things; took me back. Lol loved it.
Andrew Schulz: Infamous (2022)
Best Comedy Special since Delirious
Yes I said it! What else would you expect from a living legend who's genius coined the term to describe Amber Heard (who has a body count that includes Elon Musk and J Depp) as "The Throat Goat!"?
The layers in the jokes, the build up, all of it is simply uncanny. My favorite bit - "Y'all" - on the hottest of topics, scoop-scoop (abortion), incorporates political jabs, hot button issue, insults both sides of the debate, all while making both sides laugh first at dissing one side, then laughing at themselves; and even LOCALIZES it by saying y'all in an Austin theater. That's a comedy GOAT.
Schulz for President!
Elvis (2022)
Austin is Elvis! just survive the first hour and it's fun
Watch for Austin!
The rest are atrocious - tom hanks slips in and out of his accent, just weird to look at him in a fat suit; the wife was omg HORRIBLE as some people said "forgetful;" the first hour was so confusingly directed like what the heck we all wanted the focus on the beginning years but it felt like a comic book stylized then had jarring cuts throughout just felt so disjointed. Admittedly I fell asleep midpoint for a few minutes.
But if to can survive the first hour it becomes a decent movie that's filled with the songs and the uncannily handsome Austin Butler. Lawdy lawdy that man is blessed!
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Best MOVIE EVER!
This is why movies were made!!!
At times speechless absolutely stunned at a loss for words and at other times couldn't help but cheer shout fist pump clap lean back in the chair lean forward slide left slide right spill the popcorn
the entire theater felt the same way I'm watching it again in a different theater in a different city super excited about the audience reaction because it's almost already sold out
This is why movies were made
thank you Tom Cruise!
The Bad Guys (2022)
overqualified actors for boring script
5/10 straight to stream quality starring overqualified actors for a mediocre and predictable story even for the kids. Awkwafina needed a much bigger role. Her energy is off the charts but terribly limited dialogue. Ramos is a welcome surprise and the fart and butt jokes got the theater full of kids into an uproar.
Game Theory with Bomani Jones (2022)
potential for something greater?
His sports pieces are good, but his street interviews are great and tease the idea that maybe his focus should be flipped. His grasp of culture, his sincerity and comfort with strangers and the ensuing conversations are much better than the sports side of the show, which can be drawn out 20 minutes too long. Instead, I would love to see him just talking with those everyday people. He isnt intimidating or egotistical, and gets people to confess things like a dude who wears matching pajamas with his cockapoo! Cmon that is just hilarious.
365 dni (2020)
a metaphor for greed and lust in modern corporate retreats
Traveling for work? Not so fast! Be sure to look around the corner before crossing the mediterranean otherwise you may fall in love or is it lust? 9/10 stars only because we didnt get to see Paris but she wore a tourist cap that said Paris.
The Batman (2022)
Best Batman - Ever
People will break down the movie in a million ways - no that is not the way to watch this masterpiece. Simply sit back and let it whisk you away.
It is a true joy to be alive in this movie era. Batman is 2022's reminder of what a cinematic experience can truly be.
Thank you to the entire cast!
Alex Rider: Mirror (2021)
Alex forgot his skills?
Are we supposed to believe Alex is a timid teen again and forgot everything he learned in S1? He ended S1 so clever and bold... as a fan of s1 hard to hit reset but I'll give it a shot.
Succession: Lion in the Meadow (2021)
bringin adrien brody in was a mistake
Takes away from Brian Cox star power. But sooo weird to see him without an accent. But Macfaydem redeems the episode with his prison commentary "how late can I read?" and something about esrning phone calling cards...
The Edge of All We Know (2020)
as boring as listening to the silence of space
Could have been so much better with such amazing scientists doing fascinating work. Soundtrack could have helped it along like cosmos, or with a narrator like that. Feels slipshod tv episode drawn out way too long.
Invincible: We Need to Talk (2021)
best movie - i mean, episode - in a long time!
The score is enthralling this has to be put on the big screen id pay big bucks for a weekend marathon of season 1 with fellow fans omg this episode was spectacular!
Invincible (2021)
sweet surprise -for a non-comic non-animated movie fan
First episode in and im hooked. Clickbait on amazon's front page - and the sweet surprises include famous actors voice i recognize in almost every other scene- from m. Ali to jk to steve its just as fun to pause and confirm the actors voicing the roles to the great storyline. Didnt think id ever watch an animated movie when im not babysitting but hey this is for adults and im all in.
Last Chance U: Basketball (2021)
Return to the Magic Formula of LCU I
I love LCU football series but the last season was a snoozefest. This brings back the magic: incredible young men with problems stacked against them, some by the own doing, but you are rooting for them all the way in life more importantly; basketball is just the backdrop. these young men and coaches and their loved ones supporting them - they arent just in LA but in everyones backyard just go to your local Juco games amd ahow support. see it first hand. show em love
Coming 2 America (2021)
if anything a reminder to watch the original
Not even a sequel more like a rehash
forgettable
but hey original is so good
Cheer (2020)
The Magic of American Sports
Cheer captures this magic that sports can deliver - playing out of your mind physically and mentally to mature into a better person. Cheer has that special formula that worked for Last Chance U Season 1 (not the rest of the seasons). You love Monica, you just do. She's that coach you don't wanna be caught alone with in a dark alley, who will wipe the street clean with your face if you so much as offend one of her "kids." Of note - her argument with her pastor about her gay players. She will not back down. She is a badger. But you gotta give her your all, and she will give you her all. A totally understandable transaction for a young adult athlete.
And as LCU S1, you care about these kids. They come from the most incredible of circumstances, so painful to learn about them. And heartbreaking to see. You just root for them. Dream with them. And you know, as the season goes on, that some of them just cant help themselves and may fall.
Speaking of falling, there are some absolutely shocking stunt scenes that make you never ever ever question the toughness of cheerleaders. ever.
Last Chance U (2016)
Just watch S1+2 absolutely awesome!
S1 was so good I had to do a double take when I saw it was a documentary, not a drama. I'm like what? really? It couldn't have been scripted better! S1 really captures the young American athlete - emerging from rags to one day the riches of D1 college sports - and most of them wont make it. But you root for them anyway. Maybe more interestingly, LCU dives into the mindset of an American football coach - unlikable drill sergeants that validate their tactics with a "victory at all costs" philosophy. Coach cant help himself, and in a weird way, that makes him likeable. It leaves the viewer to wonder, is success in sports it worth all this emotional abuse? Are American sports really good for our kids? The answer isn't so obvious. Most of these JUCO kids dont have another option. Many are heroes just for making it this far. And many wont make it. But you care about them, you get transported to the most random town in Mississippi, and you love every minute of it.
Season 2 is good, then Seasons 3 and 4 happened, and they sucked, making you root against the coach - the most despicable of coaches - and even the players - Independent didnt capture the magic of S1/2. And S5 while in my home state of Cali, just feels like all the kids are whiners and the coach is past his prime - but worst of all, it's absolutely boring! Good thing the same producers made Cheer that captured some of that Season 1 magic.
Succession (2018)
I HYPER-decant my wine now bless you!! ty
Thats why its a great series. pulled me in, curious about this train wreck familiy, but yet they hold on and somehow feel like a family because of their individual craziness. I dont like dark humor I click not interested, but accidentally played this and couldnt look away. It merges business concepts and family drama on film and makes it work. obviously the Papa is in his best role that Ive seen him in. And I HYPER DECANT my wine now, thanks!!!
